Hi, we are Matt and Dawn. If you’re visiting our site, you probably know us.
If you’ve found our site by way of Internet sleuthing, then it’s a bit creepy, but get to know us.
Matt is an early-rising, dog-loving, river-paddling Phillies fan. By day, he’s a web developer for a digital marketing agency in Richmond, Virginia. He spent nearly nine years in the newspaper industry starting out as a photojournalist before transitioning to web development. Originally from Croydon, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photojournalism from the Rochester Institute of Technology. In 2011, after living in several cities over the years, Matt moved to Richmond and fell in love with the city.
Dawn is a feet-on-the-ground, dog-loving, garden-growing Braves fan. By day, she’s a communications, marketing, and reputation risk strategist. She spent more than a decade working for a global health non-profit in corporate communications and marketing. Dawn is from Friendship, Maryland, a rural town outside of Annapolis. She earned a Bachelor of Science in organizational management and marketing from the University of South Carolina. Like Matt, after living in several cities over the years, she moved to Richmond in 2012 and fell in love with the city.
Matt and Dawn met in 2013.
Still relatively new to Richmond, they had found common interests on Twitter (#rva) and enjoyed random conversations about gardening, dogs, and city life. Early one morning in December 2013, Dawn realized there was a mouse in her house. Realizing she needed some help, she sent a message on Twitter,
Need a man. Or a cat. Preferably one that’s not scared of a trapped mouse. #icanthandlecritters
Soon enough, Matt offered to stop by her house later that day to help out. To thank him for his kindness and bravery, Dawn dropped off a bag of coffee Matt had described as one of his favorites to his office along with an offer to grab a cup of coffee one day, if he wanted. A few hours later, he called and asked to take her up on the coffee, and they’ve been together ever since.
Together, they have three dogs: Eliza, a Chow mix; Star, a Gordon Setter mix; and, Wally, a West Highland White Terrier. In May 2016, Matt and Dawn bought a late Victorian house in Richmond and enjoy making it their home near the James River. The dogs run the house and yard.
An adventure together.
In March 2017, Matt and Dawn traveled to Spain for 10 days of food, wine, and sightseeing. A late winter storm had hit the East Coast, resulting in delayed flights and carryon bags being gate checked, which delayed the couple further as they tried to make the overnight flight from New York to Madrid, Spain. Matt offered to sprint ahead to the connecting gate to let the airline attendants know they had arrived while instructing Dawn not to leave the bags. Twenty minutes later, Matt and Dawn, with bags in hand, had missed their original flight, but were boarding a new flight to Barcelona, Spain, and were settling in for the long flight over the Atlantic.
After landing in Barcelona the next day, they flew to Madrid, and took a train to their first destination, Seville. After enjoying their first full evening in Spain, they headed out the following day to explore the city. They visited the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See, one of the largest churches in the world, and toured the courtyards extending around the grounds. Near the Plaza de Triumph, they found a quiet courtyard bordered with orange trees. Two small dogs were playing with small oranges that had fallen from the trees, and Matt and Dawn threw oranges for the dogs to fetch. After some time, Dawn suggested that she and Matt move on to tour more of the sights. Matt agreed, and as he began to kneel while holding an engagement ring stashed in his jacket and previously stowed away in one of the carryon/gate checked bags that could not be left behind, he asked if first, she would take the next steps in an adventure together. After realizing that Matt was indeed proposing, “right here, now,” Dawn said, “¡sí!”
